June is the perfect time to get outside and take in the beautiful scents, sights, and feelings of summer. And with National Gardening Week and National Gardening Exercise Day (yes there’s a holiday for that), taking place this month, now is the perfect time to put those gloves and shovels to work and begin perfecting your garden.
Check out these 5 tips that will help you be faster, cleaner, and more efficient in making your grow-your-own dreams a reality.
1. Site it right.
First things first, location is key. Place your garden in a part of your yard where you’ll see it regularly and where the sun is likely to hit. This way, you’ll remember to spend time in it and the plants will also receive their daily dose of vitamins from the sun’s rays. Most edible plants, including many vegetables, herbs, and fruits, need at least 6 hours of sun in order to thrive.
2. Choose the right plants.
It’s important to select plants that match your growing conditions. That means putting sun-loving plants into a sunny spot, choosing heat-tolerant plants in warm climates, and giving ground-gobbling vines ample elbow room. Make sure to also research and pick varieties that will grow well where you live and in the space you have.
3. Start with great soil.
When starting a garden, one of your best investments is buying a soil that is nutrient-rich and well-drained. Blend store bought garden soil into the top of 6 to 8 inches of existing soil if you’re planning to plant in the ground. If you’re planting in a raised bed, make sure to use bed soil instead.
4. Add some mulch.
Apply a layer of mulch that’s 2 to 3 inches deep around each plant. This will help reduce weeds by blocking out the sun, and reducing moisture loss through evaporation. You can purchase mulch or you can make your own using straw, shredded leaves, pine straw, or some other locally available material.
5. Feed plants regularly.
In addition to watering your plants regularly, make sure to feed them plant food as well. A month after planting, begin adding plant food to your garden’s diet.
Follow these tips and you will have have super garden success!
